Jurassic Coast Designs didn’t begin with a business plan.

It began with glass.

Like many creative journeys, it started with curiosity. I became fascinated by fused glass - the variety, the techniques and the stunning results. How you can take something hard and brittle, then combine and melt it into something eye-catching, curvaceous and colourful. That curiosity led to watching thousands of YouTube videos, finding a second-hand kiln and now thoroughly hooked, to building a studio in the garden.

That studio became the foundation for everything that followed.

From there came fused glass jewellery and decorative pieces. People began asking to buy them so I set up a website. Then came conversations with my husband about creativity, and how many talented artists struggle with production, logistics, and marketing. These are skills I’d learned from previous businesses.

That sparked a bigger idea and Jurassic Coast Designs was created to remove those barriers. Dorset based artists can provide high-resolution images of their work and we turn them into wall art, cards, and homeware. We manage listings, manufacturing, marketing, and fulfilment. The artists retain copyright, earn commission on their products, and affiliate income on wider sales. It leaves them free to create while generating extra income.

Here are a few lessons I’ve learned along the way:

Stepping out of Venezia Santa Lucia station is like walking onto a stage set. The Grand Canal lies directly ahead, gondolas bobbing, vaporetti sliding past and a cacophony of noise and people. Venice doesn’t ease you in gently — it sweeps you up. And the best way to fall under its spell, we discovered, was to avoid the crowds and the tourist hot spots. Instead, especially as my husband is a chef, we choose to discover the more authentic parts of the city following the trail of some of the city’s bacari.

These little wine bars, scattered through the labyrinth of calli (narrow streets) and campos (squares), are where Venetians pause for an ombra (a small glass of wine) accompanied by cicchetti, those jewel-like snacks displayed along the counter. To spend a day wandering from one to the next is to taste Venice in its truest form.

We crossed the Ponte delle Guglie and slipped into Cannaregio, one of the city’s most lived-in quarters. A short walk brought us to Cantina Vecia Carbonera, tucked beside a canal. Inside was dark and cool, the bar was lined with platters of crostini: baccalà (salt cod) whipped to a creamy cloud, anchovies draped over soft cheese, slivers of prosciutto folded with precision. We ordered two small white wines and a roll filled with rare beef and mustard to share. This all came to just 6 euro and we knew we had a fun day ahead.

The term ombra means shade and comes from a centuries-old tradition in Piazza San Marco. Wine sellers used to set up their stalls at the base of the Campanile (the tall bell tower beside the basilica). To keep their wine cool in the days before refrigeration, they would constantly move their barrels and jugs around the square to remain in the shadow (ombra) of the tower as the sun shifted during the day.

Locals began to say they were going “to drink in the shadow” (andare a bere all’ombra). Over time, the expression shortened simply to ombra — and the word stuck, becoming synonymous with a modest glass of wine.

Our next stop, Ca d’oro Alla Vendova was heaving with locals on their morning break. The house speciality is the humble polpetta — crisp, golden meatballs served on greaseproof paper. They’re best eaten standing shoulder to shoulder at the bar, washed down with un’ombra di rosso – red wine this time .

The walk along Strada Nova is a sensory jolt: shopfronts overflowing with glass trinkets, grocers selling pyramids of peaches, children weaving between slow-moving tourists. We ducked into Osteria Al Promessi-Sposi where the cicchetti were more inventive, sardines marinated with onions and pine nuts, balanced with a touch of sweetness.

By now, the lanes funnelled us toward the Rialto Bridge. Crowds jostled for photographs, but step just a little further and the mood shifts. The Rialto Market still hums with life in the mornings: fishmongers clattering ice, traders shouting prices, shoppers filling canvas bags with artichokes and clams. Just behind it hides Cantina Do Mori, a wood-panelled bacaro with copper pots dangling from the beams. Founded in the 15th century, it feels unchanged for centuries; Casanova himself is rumoured to have drunk here.

Nearby, Bacaro al Ravano offered a quick ombra, while Ostaria dai Zemei, run by twin brothers, brimmed with conviviality. These two spots capture the Rialto spirit — loud, sociable, and endlessly tempting.

Leaving the Rialto behind, the crowds began to thin. We crossed into San Polo, a neighbourhood where washing lines stretched across courtyards and the sound of children echoed in the campos. Down a narrow lane we found Aea Canevassa, a more contemplative bar, its shelves stacked with bottles. Here we lingered over a refreshing Aperol Spritz, enjoying marinated anchovies while watching the ebb and flow of Venetian life.

The longest stretch of the walk took us across the Accademia Bridge, where the view stopped me in my tracks: the dome of Santa Maria della Salute framed against the golden sweep of the Grand Canal. Just beyond lay Cantina del Vino gia Schiavi, perched beside a quiet canal in Dorsoduro. Students and locals crowded its counter, balancing plates of cicchetti: creamy gorgonzola with walnuts, prawns with courgette, tuna with artichoke. It was noisy, chaotic and utterly glorious.

A bacaro crawl isn’t just about food and drink — it’s about moving at Venice’s pace, slipping between tourist hotspots and neighbourhood corners, glass in hand, discovering the city mouthful by mouthful. And by the end of the day, we felt we’d tasted not just its wine and cicchetti, but its very soul.

There’s something a bit mad but magical about taking a 32ft sailing boat like Flying Swan out into the open sea in the dead of night — but that’s exactly what we did, heading from Falmouth to the Isles of Scilly under a blanket of stars.

We set off just before sunset, the wind fair and the sea relatively calm. As we slipped past Pendennis Point and into deeper waters, we had some unexpected company. Dolphins — a whole pod of them — came dancing alongside Flying Swan, riding the stern wave and shimmering in the setting sun. It was surreal, almost like they were escorting us as we started our adventure.

Later, the sky really put on a show. No clouds, no light pollution — just stars, scattered thick like salt across black velvet. The Milky Way stretched from horizon to horizon, and I luxuriated in the silence, my head back as I tried to spot constellations and vowed to learn more.

We took turns on watch, eyes peeled for the lights of other vessels and the occasional fishing buoy. The Scillies are beautiful, but their waters are notoriously tricky — hidden rocks, strong currents, and shifting sands make for a sailor’s headache if you're not careful.

At dawn, the silhouette of the low-lying islands began to rise out of the sea. By 8 am, the golden light was catching the tops of the hills and painting the harbour in soft pastels. We eased into Hugh Town harbour, St Mary’s, exhausted but buzzing with that weird mix of adrenaline and peace you only get after a proper night crossing.

Safe and sound, we picked up a visitor buoy, brewed a strong pot of tea and celebrated the dolphins, the stars, and Flying Swan — our trusty boat that carried us through it all. Would I do it again? Yes, in a heartbeat.

The Butterfly Room by Lucinda Riley

I only discovered Lucinda Riley in the past year, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed everything I’ve read of hers so far. Her stories have a way of pulling at your heartstrings, sometimes leaving me quite emotional. Out of all her books, I think this one is my favourite so far. The story was captivating, and I genuinely felt sad when it ended. When a book leaves you longing to spend more time with the characters, you know it’s something truly special.

Much of the story is set in Southwold in Suffolk where I used to live. The description is very accurate and there’s a great sense of place. I also really enjoyed Nicolette McKenzie’s narration which I felt, really brought the characters and story to life.

I had worked out the ending, but that didn’t detract from my enjoyment of the book, which I can highly recommend.

I never knew I could run a business, and my early years didn’t show much promise. As a teenager I was profoundly depressed and spent 6 months in hospital following a suicide attempt. I went from doing 12 ‘O’ levels to leaving school with just two and an ungraded in Maths. My confidence was very low but I got a place on a Silversmithing course at Medway College of Art and Design. It turned out that beating a flat sheet of silver into a coffee pot proved to be great therapy!

This led me to working in Hatton Garden, and after a couple of years, I got a job selling Garrards jewellery on the QE2. I travelled around the world twice and gradually worked my way up to being Shop Manager. I was really surprised to win first and second prize in the company’s suggestion competition, which totalled £1000 – a lot of money back in the 80s. This was probably an early clue that my dyslexic brain was good at seeing opportunities.

I guess the ship life set a pattern, and I continued to be the proverbial rolling stone. I have since lived in Florida, France, Bali, and Dubai—mostly following my ex-husband’s job; he also worked in Duty-Free. Sometimes, I couldn’t work due to immigration restrictions, and then I would get heavily involved in local charities.

There have been many good times and some really hard ones. I struggled with infertility for several years but in 1996 our triplets were born after our first attempt at IVF. We lived in Bali then and benefitted from so much help and the wonderful climate. Then, just before they were two, the Tiger economies collapsed, and my husband was made redundant. We got on a plane with no keys in our pockets as we didn’t own a house or a car, hadn’t got a job to go to, and had three almost two-year-olds. Luckily, my husband soon got another job setting up a beer and wine warehouse in Calais, and we moved to France. However, the weather was cold and bleak, and the children were frequently ill. When I also came down with glandular fever, my mother decided to come and help. Unfortunately, she drove on the wrong side of the road and was killed in the lane outside our house – it was just before the triplet's third birthday.

I remember very clearly deciding that this tragedy mustn’t affect my children’s lives. I’m not religious, but if she could look back, I wanted her to be proud of how I’d coped. She had always encouraged me to write, so I used a little of the money she’d left to sign up for a correspondence writing course and published quite a few articles and stories. After September 11th, I returned to the UK from Dubai to live alone with the children and joined a writers’ group. The leader there encouraged me to do an MA in Creative Writing, and having turned forty, this seemed an incredible opportunity. They accepted my published work instead of a BA, and I started the one-year course – to be honest, it’s the most fun I’ve had with my clothes on! I learned so much, and letting my creative side flow again was incredibly liberating. We learned how to publish a book as part of the course, and I was hooked. I realised being a writer was far too lonely an occupation for me and the bright world of publishing beckoned. I started Accent Press in 2003 in my front bedroom but quickly moved to a tiny office and employed a full-time assistant. Accent Press became known for being nimble and we certainly were quick on the scene when ebooks started. We won numerous publishing awards, and I was even invited to Buckingham Palace to meet the Queen in recognition of my contribution to business in Britain. We had some amazing highs and a fair few lows but I’m incredibly proud of what the team at Accent Press achieved. We created Amazon Number One bestsellers, and for several years, we were part of the Quick Reads scheme, which publishes short books with high-interest content for adult literacy schemes. I saw how those books helped dyslexic adult learners from visiting them in prison. It really brought it home to me how dyslexia can devastate lives if people don’t get the help and support needed.

Accent Press was sold to Headline, part of the Hachette group, in 2020, and since then, I have worked as Jodi Taylor’s agent. Which, as any of you who have read her books will know, is an Honour and a Privilege!
